Job Description

At FreeState Electric Cooperative, we don't just keep the lights on - we build careers that power the future. We are currently hiring for one Lineman, starting at any level from Apprentice 1 through Journeyman .

Starting wages will be determined based on the level at which you are hired. Our advancement program leverages the Merchant's Job Training and Safety Program, specifically designed for entry-level electric utility personnel. Current lineman wages range from $30.27 - $50.95 per hour.

Whether you're just beginning your career or bring years of experience, you'll find opportunity here to make a difference in the communities we serve. As the largest rural electric cooperative in Eastern Kansas, FreeState serves more than 15,000 member-owners in a democratic, not-for-profit structure. Unlike investor-owned utilities, our profits are returned to members as capital credits.

What You'll Do

  • Construct, maintain, and operate overhead and underground distribution systems with exposure to various outside weather conditions.
  • Perform construction and maintenance on non-energized lines, with increasing energized work responsibilities as you advance to Journeyman status.
  • Learn and apply safe operating methods, including climbing poles, bucket truck work, and rubber glove techniques.
  • Troubleshoot outages, perform switching operations, and interpret maps and staking sheets.
  • Respond to outages and emergencies as part of an on-call rotation.
  • Maintain cooperative vehicles, tools, and equipment.
  • Participate in ongoing safety training, professional development, and advancement testing.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent (degree in electrical power & distribution strongly preferred).
  • Licenses: Valid Class A CDL without L or Z restriction.
  • Training & Experience: Basic mechanical aptitude, ability to climb poles and work outdoors, strong willingness to learn. Demonstrated proficiency in line construction, maintenance, energized work, troubleshooting, and compliance with safety standards.
  • Certifications: First Aid, CPR, Pole Top Rescue, and Bucket Truck Rescue (or ability to obtain/maintain).
  • Physical Demands: Ability to lift 50 lbs. frequently and 100 lbs. occasionally, work at heights, and perform physically demanding tasks in all weather conditions.

  • Additional Benefits: Life insurance, long-term disability, and paid time off.
  • Career Development: On-the-job safety training, advancement through our lineman program, and professional development opportunities.
  • Culture: Employee-focused, safety-first, and member-driven.
