Position Summary:

The Senior Prospect Research Manager, Strategic Gifts is responsible for supporting the identification and qualification of future financial supporters and funders of Special Olympics, with an emphasis on individuals and family and institutional foundations.

Primary Responsibilities:

40% - Major/Principal Gift Prospect Identification: Proactively and independently plan and execute strategies to identify sources of major gift private support for fundraising initiatives. Present proactively identified prospects that have been rated through comprehensive research and analysis that have the capacity to give a gift in excess of $10,000. Include notes of interdisciplinary interests, philanthropic goals and past support, known relationships and networks, and affinity to the Special Olympics mission.

  • Conduct some reactive research, stemming from leads and suggestions from Special Olympics staff and volunteers, as requested.
  • Prospective donors will be identified through a variety of techniques, including: (i) Program-specific and regional prospecting and mapping; (ii) Sphere of Influence Mapping; and (iii) Identification of key populations from wealth screening results (future project).
  • Stay aware of and bring expertise on new sources/software/trends for prospect research, regularly evaluating and providing updates existing sources, including cost benefits.

30% - Research, Analysis and Evaluation: Utilize quantitative criteria to evaluate each prospect's potential and propensity to give. Evaluate research results to develop and implement further research strategies utilizing ethical intelligence-gathering techniques per APRA guidelines. Proficiently use the Constituent Relationship Management system (Salesforce) to analyze prospect data, institute basic moves management processes, and run basic queries. Use industry-established tools and best practices for identification work.

  • Develop stage and alignment criteria to better review, track, rank and report on status of individual and foundation prospects and current donors.
  • Analyze and synthesize data to identify patterns and trends that can inform fundraising strategies.
  • Lead monthly prospect pool discussions on a monthly basis.
  • Coordinate and work with IT staff and other experts to ensure maintenance and management of prospect identification information and tracking systems across the department's CRM platform.

20% - Consultation and Writing: Consult and meet with Strategic Gifts team members and programmatic team colleagues to provide comprehensive research analysis and strategic insights on major gift prospects. Write accurate and comprehensive profiles, biographies and project summaries for development staff per established protocols. As requested, draft outgoing correspondence and inquiry notes to prospects/prospect office staff to begin communication stream for relationship building.

10% - Other duties as assigned , including staff support at SOI donor events, attending internal events and activities, support to stewardship activities and actions, etc.

Qualifications:

  • 3-6 years of previous experience in development operations, in particular prospect research, prospect management, and major gift/foundation fundraising and adeptness in maintaining confidentiality.
  • Deep familiarity and comfort with the U.S. and global foundation community and a sense for the type of donor who may have an affinity to the mission, including high net-worth donors and family foundations.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously with a high level of independence and initiative and significant inter- and cross- department collaboration and support, and able to juggle multiple assignments on deadline.
  • Capability to synthesize large amounts of data, with a strong attention to detail and accuracy, into concise and actionable dashboards, reports, and queries.
  • Strong analytical and research skills, with experience using various research tools and databases, such as Donor Search, Wealth-X, iWave, Wealth Engine, RelSci. Google searches, LexisNexis, NOZA, Foundation Directory Online, and other common sources; Experience analyzing Securities and Exchange Commission filings and other financial data a plus; Experience with a donor development databases such as Salesforce, Microsoft Dynamics & the Microsoft suite of programs.
  • Experience in drafting and writing key communications resulting in initial response and engagement, including communications on behalf of senior leadership.

  • Willingness and ability to travel independently.
  • Bachelor's degree required or equivalent experience.
